Buying a new home is an exciting and busy time. The transition from old home to new home will go smoothly if you stay focused on your goal.
Make sure to set up utilities at your new home. When your rate is locked and your closing is scheduled, it’s time to schedule the start of utilities and home services at your new home. When calling to start service for gas, electric or other home service for your new home, you may be asked for your social security number when setting up your new account.
Be sure to call at least a week or two in advance of your new home closing to ensure the utilities are in your name and running on the day of your closing.

If you aren’t sure which electric or gas company provides service to your home, just start dialing. Customer service representatives at most utility companies are very good about telling you if your new home is in their service area or not. Chances are, they will tell you which is the correct utility company and give you the phone number to call.
